June 2005 - HIGHFIELDS SIXES TOURNAMENT 2005

Again a great time was had by all at the Highfields Sixes Tournament this year. A cloudy Saturday gave way to a roasting hot Sunday and many pink faces were on display by the end of the weekend! Two pirate themed teams were entered into the competition and both had a rather turbulent time!

The Mad Mutineers (Lozza, Linzi, Dusty, Liz, Tilley, Janey, Ali) got off to a great start with a 5-1 victory in their first match but the rest of Saturday was a disappointment as they failed to pick up any more points. This meant that they were entered into the plate competition on the Sunday. The first match, played on everyone’s favourite surface – grass (!), was a pretty even affair against Boots but the Mutineers got two past the opposition and took the points. In the next game, against the Bunnies, Ali went on the rampage, scoring 6 very fine goals! This meant they’d won through to the final but unfortunately there was no opposition in sight! Due to a mix up the team the Mutineers were meant to play were unaware of the match and had already had showers so the Mutineers were declared champions! Great performances from everyone on the team and a special mention for Janey on her guest appearance!

A very different couple of days for the Sea Queens (Amy, Sarah, Sam, Vicky, Kaz, Nicole, Kate). A defeat in the first game at the hands of Highfields 1XI (eventual finalists) meant that the outcome of the weekend did not look pretty! But the girls soon got it together and played some lovely hockey to win all their remaining Saturday matches, eventually qualifying second in their group for the cup competition on Sunday. After a few drinks on Saturday night a 10.10 showdown with Dipswich was not the most appealing proposition and ended in a disappointing 5-1 defeat. The next match was a better performance, winning 3-0 against Loughborough Students. News that Liverpool had beaten Dipswich meant that a good result from the game against Liverpool could put the Queens through to the semi-finals and when the Sea Queens scored the first goal it looked promising. However people’s tired legs soon became evident and Liverpool ended up 4-1 winners. Disappointing after some great performances, especially from Kaz, Nicole and Kate Sharland (on loan from Leicester Fyffes!) up front. Outstanding play between the three of them resulted in some great goals throughout the weekend.

A fantastic weekend was had by all! Now looking forward to our next tournament at Kettering where we will be going as surfers! Can’t wait!

May 2005 - SEASON OVER!
The 2004/2005 Charnwood season can only be described as turbulent! The team started well, defeating eventual league runners-up Cannock in the first game but the following three games were disappointing. Two losses and a draw from teams we would normally expect to defeat meant that the outlook was not bright! But in the final game of October Charnwood brought together everything Notty had taught in coaching and combined it with the players’ natural ability, to produce the best performance many had seen from a Charnwood team in quite a while! The 4-2 victory over Belper was, for all, the highlight of the season, even though we didn’t get any chocolate cake at teas!!! One win, two draws and two losses from the final games before Christmas meant that we went in to the break mid-table but on a bit of a low note as the team felt that we really could be performing better. 2005 brought with it it’s fair share of tough games but the team could be proud of the fact that, with only two losses out of 8 league games, we ended the season in fifth place with one less defeat than last season.

One more significant event of 2005 was the return of Debbie ‘Dusty’ Mason to the pitch. Despite having a serious injury, Dusty has stuck with Charnwood and helped out in many ways, especially as team manager. Everyone knew how much she wanted to get back on the pitch and so were all very happy when she marked her return with a player of the match award at Towcester.
