Sunday  2nd  March

Melton 1              v                Charnwood Sileby 2nds

Score:                     4                    -                              2

Charnwood Sileby had the opportunity today to assess the standard of hockey played in the Leicestershire premiership. Charnwood Sileby currently lie in 2nd place in the Leicestershire 1st Division and are fighting for promotion. Today they played premiership side Melton 1 in the semi final of the plate.

Both teams began the match with equal spells of possession. There did not look to be too much difference in the standard of hockey between the teams as both teams enjoyed chances on goal. However, Melton were first to turn the chances into goals. Unfortunately for Charnwood, Melton were able to put away four goals in quick succession leaving Charnwood 4 –0 down. Melton were very quick on the break and quick passing occasionally left Charnwood short in defence. Charnwood however, continued to fight up until half time but could not get the break they needed.

Half time:  4 – 0

It was decided at half time that Charnwood would put the first half behind them and start again. Despite being 4-0 down the players did not lose their confidence and came out fighting, determined to get a goal. The hard work paid off and Charnwood were soon awarded with a goal. A good strike from the captain Ali Goodyer forced a save from the Melton keeper and Cath Drew was positioned well to get the rebound and slotted the ball into the back of the net.

The goal gave Charnwood confidence and they kept the pressure on, fighting hard both up front and in defence. Charnwood created a second goal when Ali Goodyer hit a reverse stick strike, which flew into the corner of the net.

Charnwood managed to prevent Melton from scoring any further goals, but unfortunately could not create any more of their own. A great performance from the Melton goalkeeper prevented Charnwood from getting back into the game and the final score stood at 4 – 2. Charnwood were left disappointed with the loss but the match did give them confidence that they could cope with premiership hockey should they get promoted.
