Charnwood Sileby 1st Match Report - Saturday 3rd November

Loughborough Students 3rds vs Charnwood Sileby

Charnwood travelled the short journey to Loughborough University on Saturday with the hope that they would be able to change the fortunes of the past few weeks. With a squad of 15 players the spirits and hopes were high that today fortunes could change.

The game started really positively with Charnwood instantly putting the students under huge amounts of pressure. Val Smith hassled the student’s defenders and was unfortunate not to score in the first few minutes, during this goal mouth scramble Val did mange to get hit in the head but this did not deter Val and she continued to push forward. A short corner was awarded after Sue Simpson took the ball into the circle and the ball was kicked by a defender. With a good strike by Sharon Webster the goalkeeper just managed to get her stick on the ball and again another goal scoring opportunity was taken away. The students with youth on their side broke quickly down the pitch and in a repeat of previous weeks scored a goal completely against the run of play.

With a hard hitting half time talk by captain Deb Mason the Charnwood team walked out for the second half determined to make a difference and they did. Everyone gave 110% and in a break from defence the ball moved swiftly to Sharon McGuken who skilfully dribbled past 3 defenders and flicked the ball into the roof of the net taking the score to 1-1. Charnwood continued to push and had 90% of the play but were unable to score any further goals. Player of the match Linzi Webster made sure the students didn’t get a shot at goal from there short corners by any means necessary including taking a close range shot to her foot. This commitment put together with the ground covered up and down the pitch was the reason player of the match was awarded to her. The team showed Great Spirit and determination which hopefully in the next few weeks will start to pay off with some more wins and goals.
