Club-School
links
You may know about the Sport England push for Club-School links.
England Hockey in turn are encouraging Clubs First Accredited hockey
clubs to build local initiatives as part of the Single System.
Linked here
is a case study focused on South Leicester Youth Hockey and the work
done in Oadby & Wigston schools.
This is
our 3rd year running the programme. The club has increased
membership now to over 130 and continues to attract new players from
families who have had no previous connection with hockey.
Perhaps
this is an item worth publishing on the website? I would be happy to
talk to any clubs thinking of doing the same.

Leicestershire and Rutland Youth Games –
Year
7/8 Girls and Boys
(held at
Loughborough
University
on
Sunday 24th June 2007)
Story – 16 young umpires (15 to 18 years) umpire at Youth Games:
The Leicestershire and Rutland Hockey Association were again pleased to
work with the County Sports Partnership in providing a quality
opportunity for young people to participate in Sport. At the above
event Hockey has a proud tradition of being the only sport which
provides all the ‘officials’ as umpires for all the matches. This year
16 umpires presided over 50 matches. Margaret McLoughlin (umpire
manager / coach) found the ‘magnificent 16’ - ably assisted by both
Steve and Annette Sellars and helped them to produce some great
performances. A fantastic mentor for the group was Annie Allum who, only
a few short years ago, also started out at the same competition. Annie
has recently been selected onto the National Young Umpire Promising List
(NYUPL) development panel, giving her a realistic future as an
International and possibly Olympic umpire!
Margaret said ‘ It was initially hard work to find the amount
of
umpires we needed, but right from the first contact, the young umpires said yes and made my job really easy on the day. They
listened well to the coaches and put lots of effort into their work.
They should be very proud of the standards they achieved. I
know they were all very nervous at first and add into that mix that
they were also faced with teams from France (Strasbourg) and Germany
(Saarland) who spoke little English they truly were great.
It
was a fantastic day and we have definitely got some more great
umpires for the future’.
Noel Haines (County Sports Partnership Manager) said ‘The County Hockey
Association rightly has a proud record for supporting the Youth Games.
They have already produced young umpires who have reached National and
International standard. We consider the umpires to be a team, the same
as all those others representing their Council Districts who come on the
day and with support it’s great to see what they continue to achieve.
We look forward to continuing or partnership with Hockey in the future
and look forward to tracking yet more young peoples achievements’.
