Aug 18th - Congratulations Due ..........

Congratulations to Jess Hickman on her gold medal performance with England at Inverclyde, Scotland in late July when England took the Home Internationals title beating Wales, Ireland and Scotland.
Wales were first up and England won 5-3. The Irish were dispatched 1-0 before a comprehensive 4-0 win over Scotland. Jess started on the bench in the first two matches but was on from the start against the Scots. The international season has certainly provided Jess with plenty of learning opportunities and we can be sure that her extra confidence will show in her club performances in the coming season.

Holly Payne's international season is not quite over yet. The England U18 international has been picked for the England side at the UK School Games in Wales for matches against Wales, Scotland and Ulster. The event starts on 2nd September and England will defend a title won last year by a side that included Lauren Turner and Lucy Dawkings from Leicester. Good luck to Hollly.

Before that 5 of our girls will be in Amstelveen, Holland contesting the prestigious European Championship with a top four place a must for World Championship qualification. England's pool ought to see them reach the semis. They face Russia, the tough Dutch side and then Azerbaijan in what could be the decisive encounter. Leicester provides 5 of the England squad: Chloe Rogers, Beckie Herbert, Kerry Williams, Katie Long and a recalled Hannah MacLeod. Good luck to them all in the event which begins on 22nd August and commiserations to Gemma Darrington who just missed out.
Finally, special congratulations to Lauren Turner and Abi Harper who can both be very proud of their performances in finishing 4th in the Junior World Cup in Boston, USA. Unbeaten until the semis they lost to a last minute extra time goal to Argentina and then went down 2-1 to Korea, the defending champions, in the bronze medal match,  in a game in which they had more than enough chances to win. Fourth is England's best ever finish so well done to both of them.

19/11/08 - Leicestershire Trio named in England National Age Group Training

Three talented Leicestershire hockey players were selected to attend the training squads for the National Age Group Squads.

Goal keeper Caitlin Jefferies who attends Vale of Catmose School and Holly Payne who attends school in Coventry were both selected for the Under 18s Squad and Jessica Hickman of Leicester Grammar School for the Under 16 Squad. All three, who play for Leicester Hockey Club will attend training between the 21st and 23rd of November, Jessica at Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre and Caitlin and Holly at HMS Temeraine in Portsmouth.

The prospective 2012 athletes were selected after their involvement in the Mercia Lynx squads at England Hockey’s Futures Cup at Cannock. The competition is a new format replacing the old regional tournaments and is part of Tier 2 Junior Regional Performance Centre (JRPC) activity of England Hockey’s Single System.

England Hockey’s National Age Group coaches and managers were present at the Futures Cup to watch the players represent their JRPC clusters as the Pennine Pumas, Mercia Lynx, Saxon Tigers and Wessex Leopards. The Under 16 Mercia Lynx girl’s squad went on to win the cup with the Under 18 girls just losing out in the final.

The final National Age Group Squads for 2009 will be selected from the November training camps. For further information on National Age Group Squads and JRPCs please go to www.englandhockey.co.uk/singlesystem

June 2008 -  Club-School links

You may know about the Sport England push for Club-School links.  England Hockey in turn are encouraging Clubs First Accredited hockey clubs to build local initiatives as part of the Single System. Linked here is a case study focused on South Leicester Youth Hockey and the work done in Oadby & Wigston schools.

This is our 3rd year running the programme. The club has increased membership now to over 130 and continues to attract new players from families who have had no previous connection with hockey.

Perhaps this is an item worth publishing on the website? I would be happy to talk to any clubs thinking of doing the same.

Best regards,

David Hogg

June 26th 2007 Leicestershire and Rutland Youth Games – Year 7/8 Girls and Boys

(held at Loughborough University on Sunday 24th June 2007)

Story – 16 young umpires (15 to 18 years) umpire at Youth Games:

The Leicestershire and Rutland Hockey Association were again pleased to work with the County Sports Partnership in providing a quality opportunity for young people to participate in Sport.  At the above event Hockey has a proud tradition of being the only sport which provides all the ‘officials’ as umpires for all the matches.  This year 16 umpires presided over 50 matches.  Margaret McLoughlin (umpire manager / coach) found the ‘magnificent 16’ - ably assisted by both Steve and Annette Sellars and helped them to produce some great performances. A fantastic mentor for the group was Annie Allum who, only a few short years ago, also started out at the same competition.  Annie has recently been selected onto the National Young Umpire Promising List (NYUPL) development panel, giving her a realistic future as an International and possibly Olympic umpire!

Margaret said ‘ It was initially hard work to find the amount of umpires we needed, but right from the first contact, the young umpires said yes and made my job really easy on the day.  They listened well to the coaches and put lots of effort into their work.  They should be very proud of the standards they achieved.  I know they were all very nervous at first and add into that mix that they were also faced with teams from France (Strasbourg) and Germany (Saarland) who spoke little English they truly were great.

It was a fantastic day and we have definitely got some more great umpires for the future’.

Noel Haines (County Sports Partnership Manager) said ‘The County Hockey Association rightly has a proud record for supporting the Youth Games.  They have already produced young umpires who have reached National and International standard.  We consider the umpires to be a team, the same as all those others representing their Council Districts who come on the day and with support it’s great to see what they continue to achieve.  We look forward to continuing or partnership with Hockey in the future and look forward to tracking yet more young peoples achievements’.

Both the Boys and Girls Competition were won by Charnwood B.C.
