Charnwood Mountsorrel progressed
to the last 16 after an excellent performance at Belper Meadows, keeping their
first clean sheet since 2015.
The first half was largely
dominated by Charnwood Mountsorrel, but despite creating several good chances, they
were unable to open their account. Dave
Allen had the first clear chance, firing just wide from the right side of the
circle. With the home side shackled by the excellent midfield and back line, it
was Charnwood who posed all the questions, with the pace of front men Paddy
Oakman and Kevin Stanton-King stretching the home defence at every opportunity Late in the first half, Will Relf was inches
away from converting at the far post after a fine cross from the left by
Stanton-King. The period ended 0-0, with
the home side pleased to be still in the game.
Belper started the second
period really well, keeping possession and posing questions of the Charnwood
rearguard. Bob Harris in the Charnwood
goal was largely untroubled, however, and the visitors worked their way back
into the match after that early pressure.
It was from a penalty corner that Charnwood eventually opened the
scoring – a slick routine led to a fierce shot by Tony Kirk which beat the home
‘keeper, but rebounded off the right hand post to Ian Wilkes, who reacted first
to convert from short range. Charnwood
were in control now and dominated possession and field position, but were
unable to score again until late in the half, when Relf slid in at the far post
to convert a right wing cross from Wilkes.
Hash Navsaria may have a had a problem finding the ground earlier in the
day, but he was on the spot in the last minute to score from close range
following good play by skipper Chris Waterfield and Oakman.
This was a good display by
Charnwood Mountsorrel and they go into the bag for the next round with some
confidence.
