Charnwood Mountsorrel (1) 1 v
2 (2) Rugby & East Warwicks

Charnwood Mountsorrel lost
this quarter-final game against a good Rugby & East Warwicks side in a hard-fought
game at Mountsorrel.
As in recent games,
Charnwood got off to a terrible start, with poor defensive play in the opening
minutes leaving the visitors’ striker clear to finish from close range. To compound their problems, a poor clearance
shortly afterwards lead to Rugby’s second goal, as Charnwood struggled to get
into the game.
The home side weathered
further pressure in that first 20 minutes, before settling and gaining parity
in the game. A period of good possession
and inter-passing lead to Dave Fox getting in on a one-to-one against the
keeper and he finished well to halve the deficit. The rest of the half was very even, with both
keepers tested, but unbeaten. Key man
Mark Taylor suffered a hamstring strain and was forced to withdraw before the
end of the half.
The second period was a
tale of long periods of Charnwood pressure, but without sufficient end
product. The visitors’ keeper played
well to deny several half-chances, whilst the home defence and midfield
generally shackled the Rugby forays forward. The best chance of the half fell
to Dave Allen, as he ghosted into the circle to collect a diagonal pass, but
was denied by Sharratt in the Rugby goal.
A desperate period of late
pressure saw Charnwood press hard, but were unable to get a deserved equaliser.
