England Hockey Men’s Veterans Cup Round 1

14.10.07

Charnwood Mountsorrel  1  v  Bournville  3

Charnwood Mountsorrel met last year’s Cup semi-finalists at the Soar Valley Leisure Centre in the first round of this year’s tournament.

This was an excellent game played in great spirit by both teams. Charnwood Mountsorrel missed an excellent opportunity to open the scoring when awarded a penalty stroke after Mark Weaver was fouled in the area. Unfortunately, skipper Chris Waterfield was unable to convert the stroke, but Charnwood did take the lead later in the half thanks to a good finish by Weaver. Bournville, despite much pressure, were unable to break the resolute home defence, which was well marshalled by Tony Kirk and Dave Allen.

The second period started with more pressure by Bournville, but Charnwood resisted well and played some good hockey to create chances for themselves. The equaliser came via a deflected penalty corner strike and, with ten minutes left and legs beginning to tire, Bournville scored twice more, both from penalty corners, to wrap up the tie.

Once again, this was a promising performance from the Charnwood team, drawn from the Leicestershire mixed leagues, and they were unlucky to draw such experienced opponents at the first hurdle.
