Charnwood Mountsorrel (4) 7 v

Charnwood Mountsorrel beat
a nine-man Hampton-in-Arden team in this Round 1 game at Mountsorrel.
The home team were also missing
several players themselves, but started well and Will Relf opened the scoring
with a fine strike from the left side of the circle, across the keeper into the
far corner. Sustained pressure at a good tempo meant that
chances were created, but the Hampton ‘keeper was in outstanding form, keeping
the home attack at bay. However, smart
work by Paddy Oakman saw him poach a goal to double the advantage when he was
first to react to a rebound off the ‘keeper’s pads. It was Oakman who extended the lead,
receiving a disguised square pass from Chris Waterfield to finish easily. With the midfield in control and chances
being created, it was no surprise when Relf got his second, reacting well after
a strike from Ravi Matharu hit the left post.
The spirited visitors scored last in the half, netting at the near post passed
stand-in goalkeeper Tony McKee to make the half-time score 4-1.
It was the visitors who
started the second period the better, working the ball around well but they
were largely contained by the home defence, well marshalled by Tony Kirk. Charnwood Mountsorrel scored next, however,
with Ian Wilkes finishing coolly on his reverse side after a fast breakaway had
stretched the visitor’s defence. The
game opened up now, as both sides tired – Hampton scored twice to bring the
score to 5-3 as chances were created at both ends. Oakman completed his hat-trick with a nice
reverse scoop following a pass by Kevin Stanton-King. Not to be outdone, Hampton scored again to
keep the game interesting at 6-4, but Stanton-King wrapped up the game with an
excellent late strike into the roof of the net after a period of sustained
pressure by the home side.
Charnwood Mountsorrel move
into the next round for the first time since 2012.
