Charnwood Mountsorrel
travelled north to Chesterfield in the quarter-finals of the England Hockey
Masters O50 Shield tournament. With a
number of regulars missing, the Club gave a debut to Vinod Patel, who fitted in
seamlessly into the back three.
Charnwood made a fantastic
start, scoring twice in the opening minutes.
Having won an early penalty corner, skipper Chris Waterfield moved the
ball to the right and Raoul Mercer drove the ball beyond the advancing keeper. Minutes later, the ball was won high in
midfield and Waterfield was on hand to set up Paddy Oakman to score well with a
reverse flick past the home keeper.
With confidence
high, the visitors played some good hockey, creating further chances before
adding to their lead. Waterfield drove
into the circle on the right side, drew the keeper and presented Kevin
Stanton-King with the opening to score with a crisp first-time shot. With the defence untroubled, marshalled by
Dave Allen and Ravi Matharu, a 3-0 half-time lead did not flatter Charnwood at
all.
The second half
followed the first in terms of pressure and chances, with the Chesterfield
keeper making some good saves to deny Oakman and Stanton-King. It was Oakman who set up the fourth,
attacking the circle from the right and sliding a ball through to Will Relf on
the far post for a well-worked tap-in.
With the midfield in control – Ian Wilkes played really well to limit
the effect of the home side’s best player – the chances flowed and only some
errant finishing kept the score down.
Oakman made it 5-0 after concerted pressure, deflecting the ball over
the line off the keeper. Chesterfield
scored a late consolation from a rare entry into the Charnwood circle, the home
forward firing home a penalty corner beyond the outstretched Tom Metson.
So Charnwood
progress into the semi-finals and await their opponents on March 13th.
