England Hockey Men’s Masters O50 Shield

Quarter-final  22/2/15

Charnwood Mountsorrel 5 (3)  v  Tring 0 (0)

Taylor, C (2), Oakman, Waterfield (2)

This game was won in the first 10 minutes, when a rampant home side converted three chances to establish an early lead that the visitor’s never threatened to overhaul.  Two goals in the second half from skipper Chris Waterfield completed the scoring.

Dynamic play between Mark Taylor and Colin Taylor ripped through the Tring defence from the start and they were ruthless in front of goal - Colin Taylor scored a couple and created another for Paddy Oakman, who finished well.  The Charnwood midfield dominated play, creating regular chances, and the home defence stifled Tring’s attacking threat.

The second period followed the same format, with the home side in control for much of the half.  Waterfield was on hand to finish at close range to extend the lead, then completed the scoring late on with a clean finish after another flowing move.

The home side featured two debutants - Will Relf had an excellent game, linking well with the established midfield engine room and Colin Taylor, a local man on ‘loan’ from Timperley HC, proved a threat throughout.

Semi-final  15/3/15

Charnwood Mountsorrel 3 (2)  v  Keswick Whitehaven 0 (0)

Taylor, C (2), Oakman

Charnwood Mountsorrel produced another display of skill and endeavour to ease through to the final of the EH Shield competition.  First half goals from Colin Taylor and Paddy Oakman saw the home team establish control of the match and Taylor doubled his tally in the second half to seal the victory.

Charnwood Mountsorrel started the game well, dominating the early exchanges.  Taylor finished from close range to give the home team a deserved lead and only fine work from the Keswick ‘keeper prevented Charnwood extending their lead.  Eventually, Paddy Oakman was on hand to finish a nice move to double the lead before the break.

The second half followed the pattern of the first, with Charnwood having most of the possession, but with Keswick looking dangerous on the break.  The solid home defence did not yield, however, and Taylor was on hand again to put the coup de grâce on a good move with an instinctive finish from a driven ball into the circle.  Once again the visitor’s ‘keeper produced an excellent display to keep out Charnwood’s attack, with Oakman going close again with a shot that rebounded off the post.

Charnwood Mountsorrel will now play Bournemouth in the Shield final on May 3rd at the Lee Valley Hockey & Tennis Centre, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park as part of the NOW: Pensions Men's KO Finals weekend.
