England Hockey Men’s Veterans Plate Round 3  25.2.07

Khalsa  6  v  Charnwood Mountsorrel  1

Charnwood Mountsorrel’s participation in this year’s tournament came to an end in this last-16 clash in the wind and rain at the St. Nicholas Park ground in Warwick.

Khalsa opened the scoring from their second penalty corner, the striker shooting home beyond the left-hand post-man and doubled their lead shortly after, collecting a half-blocked strike from another penalty corner shot and finishing clinically past the diving Mick Barlow. Charnwood were well in the game at this point, creating several chances for Mark Weaver and Kevin Stanton-King, only to be denied by the excellent home ‘keeper. When Khalsa scored just before the break, from another penalty corner, the 3-0 score line somewhat flattered the West Midlands outfit.

Charnwood started the second half with a lot of promise, playing their most fluent hockey of the match, but conceded from the first Khalsa attack. Stanton-King delivered an immediate response, finishing well in the crowded circle to make it 4-1. Unfortunately, Charnwood were not able to maintain their form and Khalsa took full control of the latter stages of the match, rounding off their victory with two more goals.

So this season’s run finished in disappointing fashion, but that cannot detract from some fine performances in the earlier rounds.
